“Who am I that I should go … ?” (Exodus 3:11)

I can think of so many examples through the years when I just sat back and waited on someone else to do something that I knew I needed to do myself. I can always come up with an excuse about why I can't do something.

Excuses. I may get away with some things—like making my bed every morning. What does it matter if my husband Dan does that? It's his bed, too! And our unmade bed obviously bothers him more than it does me anyway.

Moses said to God, "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what shall I tell them?" (Exodus 3:13 TNIV)

Has anyone ever questioned your authority? How did you respond?

In Exodus 3:13, Moses addresses his fear of his identity and authority being questioned and judged as he dealt with God's call on his life to lead the people of Israel out of the bondage of slavery. He asked God what to do and say if someone questioned his authority.

Excuse. When I spoke to a close friend about sensing God’s direction to pursue writing for publication, he responded, “What do YOU have to say?”

I don’t believe my friend meant to discourage me with his heart-rending question. But his question just echoed the doubt that I had already heard in my heart. What do I have to say? No one will believe me or listen to me!

Moses raised another objection to God: 'Master, please, I don't talk well. I've never been good with words, neither before nor after you spoke to me. I stutter and stammer'" (Exodus 4:10 MSG).

"I’m not a writer!" I can’t tell you how many times I've heard that excuse, especially when I taught freshman composition.

When I heard my students voice that excuse as a writing instructor, that’s when I went into my well-rehearsed speech, “No matter what career path you choose—whether you’re a professional writer, stay-at-home mom, or an automobile mechanic—you need to know how to communicate with your written words. That's the purpose of this class!"

Oh, Master, please! Send somebody else!" (Exodus 4:13)

Sometimes I'm afraid to do what I sense God directs me to do. I think, Surely someone else who is more skilled or experienced can do a better job!

Excuse.
When God called Moses, he questioned his own abilities. He even asked God to send someone else.
